F1’s return to Africa gives Rwanda a powerful nation-branding platform

Country’s President says the new long-term agreement with F1 will bring jobs, skills, tourism and new business to Rwanda.

Formula 1 motor racing’s return to Africa after more than three decades will give Rwanda a high-profile platform to strengthen its international image, attract tourists and investors, and position itself as a destination for major sporting and business events.

Under a 10-year agreement announced on 13 October 2026, the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda, will become part of the annual F1 racing calendar from the early 2030s.

The first race will be at a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, approximately 40km south of Kigali and adjacent to the city’s new international airport.

For Rwanda, the significance of the announcement extends well beyond motorsport and provides an opportunity to turn an established destination-marketing ambition into a media event of global proportions.

The country has already used high-profile sports partnerships to build awareness of its national brand. For example, Visit Rwanda is currently the principal front-of-shirt partner, official tourism partner and official coffee provider for English Premier League club Aston Villa.

This partnership follows Visit Rwanda’s eight-season sponsorship of Arsenal FC, which concluded in June 2026. The Rwanda Development Board said at the time that the next phase of its strategy would diversify sports partnerships and reach new markets.

Visit Rwanda also has ongoing sponsorship agreements with the French-based Paris St-Germaine football club and Spanish-based Atletico Madrid football club.

According to the publication African Business, the Rwanda Development Board has for many years utilised high-profile football club sponsorships to capture international television visibility. Hosting a Grand Prix reverses this dynamic: instead of buying space on an international jersey, Rwanda brings global brands, corporate sponsors, and luxury hospitality networks directly into its own borders.

Considerable marketing reach

Formula 1’s continental and global audiences offer considerable marketing reach, including that of more than 100-million fans across Africa – a figure that will surely rise when the first race takes place of African home soil.

Comments Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of F1: “With Rwanda joining the calendar from the next decade, our sport will race in every inhabited continent, bringing the World Championship closer than ever to fans around the globe.

“Africa has always been part of Formula 1’s future, and from the beginning we were determined to return in the right way, with the right partner, a long-term commitment and a clear vision for creating meaningful impact.

“For our fans, this is an especially exciting moment. Africa is home to more than 100-million Formula 1 fans, and that number continues to grow rapidly. We are bringing the excitement, energy and drama of Formula 1 closer to millions of people who have waited a long time to see our sport return to the continent, and we look forward to writing an exciting new chapter together.”

Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, added: “Today belongs to Africa. For more than three decades, the world’s premier motorsport championship has raced without this continent, and that changes with this agreement.

“Rwanda is proud to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, and to share this moment with more than 100-million fans across Africa, many of them young people who deserve to see the sport at home and to see themselves in it: as engineers, technicians, entrepreneurs and, one day, drivers.

“This 10-year partnership is also an investment in Rwanda’s future. The circuit in Bugesera, alongside the new international airport, will bring jobs, skills, tourism and new business to our country and our region for decades to come, because our aim was never a single race weekend, but a lasting benefit for our people.”
