BIM, the Turkish-based supermarket group, has reached a milestone in Morocco with the opening of its 1,000th store in the country.

It entered the market in 2009 and, according to emerging markets consultancy Trendtype, is now the third-largest supermarket chain and the definitive leader in discount grocery retailing in Morocco.

BIM is also active in another North African market, Egypt. But its growth there has been relatively muted by comparison.

“Moroccan consumers were far more receptive to BIM’s private-label goods (which made up 27% of sales in Morocco compared to just 11% in Egypt in 2019). Because the Moroccan division hit its financial targets and generated strong like-for-like sales growth, BIM’s head office continued to aggressively fund its network expansion there,” Trendtype notes.

Commented Morocco World News in a March 2026 article: “The Moroccan subsidiary’s performance stands in contrast to BIM’s operations in Egypt, where 2025 saw a more modest expansion of just 27 new stores, bringing the total to 445.

“In Morocco, near 18% organic growth reflects a mature logistics network, dense urban presence, and the ability to reach a rapidly growing urban population, making it the crown jewel of BIM’s international portfolio.”

Market is increasingly competitive

BIM’s market competitors in Morocco include the Egyptian-based Kazyon chain, and Supeco, the hard-discount cash-and-carry supermarket brand operated by the LabelVie Group, which also holds the franchise for Carrefour in the country.

Casino Group, the publicly listed French mass-market retail company, announced in 2025 that it will open 210 stores in Morocco over the next decade as part of its international expansion strategy.

Adds Morocco World News: “BIM manages 14,473 stores worldwide, including more than 13,000 in Turkey. Yet Morocco’s growth remains the most striking.

“The company’s model – focused on low-cost stores in suburban areas, a streamlined assortment of around 1,000 SKUs with 55% private labels, and high stock turnover – is designed to pass efficiency gains to consumers and has resonated with Moroccans facing inflationary pressures.”
