The IMM Institute of South Africa, one of the founder members of the African Marketing Confederation, had an additional surprise for its current Emerging Marketer of the Year, Pat Mahlangu, when he attended one of the regular IMM Friday networking events recently.

Mahlangu was presented with his lifetime associate membership of the institute, as well a caricature of himself with his Emerging Marketer of the Year award, which was presented to him at the IMM Marketing Excellence Awards late last year.

In a social media post, he said it is “a recognition that truly means the world to me”. He added: “Irene Gregory (CEO of the IMM Institute) gave me a challenge to gun for the Marketer of the Year in a few years. A challenge I gladly accepted.”

In her response, Gregory said: “It is so well-deserved Pat! I watch in awe of all you are achieving.”

Marketing media entrepreneur

Mahlangu is a marketing media entrepreneur with over 12 years of experience. In 2020, he launched Lerato Agency, serving both local and international brands.

His commitment to inspiring young people led to the creation of the Top 16 Youth-Owned Brands Awards, celebrating youth excellence in brand building. Also, in 2023 he was recognised as one of the Top 200 Young South Africans by Mail and Guardian and became a Play Your Part Ambassador for Brand South Africa.

In addition, he is an advisory board member at the Tshwane University of Technology, committee member of the Advertising Media Association of South Africa (Amasa) and a former Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) South Africa Education Council Member.

The IMM Fridays are regular networking breakfast events arranged by the IMM Institute, at which invited guests discuss important marketing-related topics in an informal environment. The events take place in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
