Checkers Sixty60 service releases its own range of toys to appeal to children of its growing customer base.
Checkers Sixty60, the South African on-demand grocery delivery service that has become arguably the most popular of its kind in the country, is extending the brand by releasing a range of children’s toys.
For example, a ride-on plastic bike, complete with customisable number plates and the familiar teal delivery box that opens and closes, is now being sold in certain Checkers supermarket outlets. It is suitable for children aged 3-10.

The brand has also re-released its Sixty60 1:12 scale-model toy motorbike, along with an accompanying toy delivery rider. These are available on the Sixty60 app and in selected supermarkets.
“Customers have shared so many heartwarming photos of their kids using plastic ride-on scooters as Sixty60 delivery bikes,” explains Neil Schreuder, Chief Strategy Officer for the Shoprite Group, which owns the Checkers brand.
“This appreciation for our delivery drivers – who work tirelessly to make sure orders are delivered safely and on time – inspired the rollout of what is sure to become a classic toy.”
Delivery service launched in November 2019
Launched in November 2019, Sixty60 pioneered large-scale on-demand grocery delivery in South Africa, becoming popular during the pandemic and associated lockdowns.
The delivery app has been downloaded more than 3-million times and the service delivers in more than 400 locations nationally.
According to Shoprite, Sixty60 continues to show growth, with sales surging 87% in the most recent financial reporting period to December 2022. Sales rose by 250% in the period before that.
Recently the delivery service announced that it would return the delivery fee to clients if an order arrives more than 30 minutes after the estimated time of arrival.
Delivery will also be free if an order contains fewer than 80% of a customer’s first-choice products.
