Glovo Nigeria, the e-commerce platform that specialises in q-commerce (quick-commerce) has announced a strategic partnership with Nigeria’s largest supermarket retailer, Shoprite.

The alliance offers a simple, fast and convenient experience for consumers to buy groceries online, with orders being delivered within an hour in the cities of Lagos, Abuja and Ibadan. Further locations will likely be added in future.

According to Glovo, consumers can purchase most daily essentials including freshly prepared meals, fresh fruits and vegetables. These are being sourced from all Shoprite stores in the three cities.

Shoprite’s retail operations in Nigeria were previously owned by Shoprite Holdings Limited of South Africa. But in May 2021 the business was acquisition of Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited. It currently operates 26 outlets across 14 states in the country.

Founded in 2015 in Barcelona, Spain, Glovo is a pioneering multi-category app connecting users with businesses and couriers. It offers on-demand services from local restaurants, pharmacies, grocers, beauty stores and supermarkets. Glovo operates across 25 countries in Europe, Central Asia and Africa.

The agreement between Glovo and Shoprite was signed in May, but the service has only recently been launched.

Ever-changing needs of the modern consumer

Tosin Olukoya, Strategy Manager, for Retail Supermarkets Nigeria, says e-commerce has revolutionised retail and Shoprite wants to meet the ever-changing needs of the modern-day customer by making online shopping even easier through Glovo.

“Shoprite is constantly looking for ways to deliver innovative services that make customers’ daily shopping experience easier,” Olukoya states.

“By leveraging Glovo’s global and local expertise in the quick-commerce industry, we believe this partnership will offer [a] fast and convenient home delivery service that allows us to address our customers’ needs in the digital age.”

Kolawole Adeniyi, Head of Q-Commerce for Glovo Nigeria, believes the partnership aligns with Glovo’s vision to provide all consumers with easy access to anything in their city.

“To deliver on our vision, we seek partnerships with top retailers with stores widespread across our active locations,” Adeniyi says.

“Glovo is enjoying strong growth and has big ambitions. Our goal is to make grocery shopping faster, smoother and more convenient than ever before for the customer. Our partnership with Shoprite will allow us to do this, building on this new vertical and helping us drive growth further across Africa.”
