Namibia’s Model Foods supermarket chain unveils new retail technology

Self-service checkout system and robotic assistant to help customers navigate store installed at revamped flagship outlet in Windhoek.

But SA-based company wants to sell more of its loss-making overseas retail businesses in Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Danish-based brand opens two stores in Casablanca as it launches its long-planned Africa strategy. Another store will open later this year.

Local retail brand Sawa Citi has converted an existing outlet into a Spar store. More are expected to follow.

Like its main competitors, Spar will split its retail brands into higher-income premium outlets and lower-income discount stores.

Kenya’s retail sector has witnessed sustained growth, with both local and international retailers expanding their presence.

The chain, which has at times been a controversial presence, now has multiple outlets in Nairobi, as well as in Mombasa and Kisumu.

Business was founded in 2018 on a shoestring budget. It now has 12 outlets and its own range of suya spices sold through supermarkets.

Ikea competitor is growing its global footprint and sees opportunity in North African country’s growing economy and consumer sophistication.

Choice has around 100 discount retail stores in SA and Namibia. Pepkor sees potential to triple its retail footprint in the medium term.
